Surgical Mask Selection Guide

A practical guide to three-ply construction, melt-blown filtration, fluid resistance and certification so clinical buyers can match a mask to the task.

Qué considerar

01

Understand the three-ply construction

A standard surgical mask is built from three layers: a fluid-resistant spunbond outer layer, a melt-blown middle filtration layer, and a soft inner layer that sits against the skin. The melt-blown layer is what actually filters bacteria and particles, so its quality and basis weight drive the mask's protection level.

  • Outer spunbond layer resists fluid splash
  • Melt-blown middle layer filters bacteria and particles
  • Soft inner layer for comfort against the skin
02

Match filtration and fluid resistance to the task

Bacterial filtration efficiency (BFE) and fluid resistance are the two numbers that matter most. For general clinical and diagnostic use, a mask with high BFE and splash resistance is sufficient. For surgical and high-fluid procedures, choose a mask with a higher fluid-resistance rating and a secure fit.

  • BFE measures how well the mask filters bacteria
  • Fluid resistance matters for splash-prone procedures
  • Higher-risk tasks need a stronger barrier and better seal
03

Ear loop vs tie-on

Ear-loop masks are fast to don and comfortable for short shifts, while tie-on masks give a more adjustable, secure fit for longer procedures. Choose based on how long staff wear the mask and how critical the seal is.

04

Verify certification before you buy

For export, confirm the mask carries the certification your target market requires — CE marking for Europe and FDA registration for the US. Ask your supplier for the certification file and check it covers the exact model you are ordering.

Preguntas frecuentes del comprador

Preguntas frecuentes de compra

What does BFE mean on a surgical mask?+

BFE stands for bacterial filtration efficiency. It measures the percentage of bacteria-sized particles the mask filters out of the air. A higher BFE means a stronger barrier, which matters most for surgical and clinical use.

Are ear-loop masks as protective as tie-on masks?+

Both can offer the same filtration, but tie-on masks provide a more adjustable, secure fit that reduces leakage around the edges. For long or high-risk procedures, a tie-on or well-fitted mask is usually preferred.

What certification should I request for export?+

For Europe, request CE marking; for the US, FDA registration. Ask your supplier for the certification file covering the exact model and confirm it matches your target market before ordering.
