A respirator only protects if it seals

The filtration rating of a KN95 is measured on a sealed test rig, not on a real face. If the respirator does not seal against the wearer's face, unfiltered air leaks around the edges and bypasses the filter entirely. This is why fit is as important as the filter media — a high-efficiency respirator with a poor fit still lets contaminated air in. For healthcare and industrial use, a secure seal is the difference between protection and no protection.

Ear loop vs headband: match the closure to the shift

Ear-loop respirators are fast to don and convenient, but they can cause ear fatigue and may not hold as secure a seal for long shifts. Headband respirators use dual straps that go around the head, distributing pressure and holding a more secure seal for extended wear. For long or high-risk shifts, a headband design is usually preferred; for short tasks, ear loops are convenient.

The nose clip creates the top seal

The nose clip is the most common leak point on a respirator. A malleable nose clip that can be shaped to the bridge of the nose creates a tight top seal, while a weak clip leaves a gap. When you evaluate a respirator, check that the nose clip is full-width and malleable, and that it holds its shape after adjustment. A respirator that leaks at the nose is not protecting the wearer.

How to check the fit before you buy in bulk

For a bulk order, request samples and have your team test the fit across a range of face sizes. A respirator that fits one person may not fit another, so a single model rarely fits everyone. Confirm the model is available in the sizes you need, and for healthcare settings confirm fit testing is performed for each wearer.
